Anchorage, AlaskaMarathon's exploration activities center on the Cook Inlet and Kenai peninsula, with employees located in both Anchorage and Kenai. Anchorage is the largest city in the state of Alaska and comprises more than two-fifths of the state's population. Anchorage is located on a triangular peninsula in the upper branches of the Cook Inlet. Its northern geography means Anchorage is characterized by long nights and short days during the winter. There are approximately 100,000 glaciers in Alaska, 60 of which are within 50 miles of Anchorage. A major port, Anchorage receives over 95 percent of the freight entering Alaska and is also a hub of the Alaska Railroad, which offers summer service to several other Alaskan cities. Anchorage also features four colleges, several museums, the Alaska Native Heritage Center and the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. Other events of particular note are the International Ice Carving Competition and the Great Alaska Shootout, the annual NCAA Division I basketball tournament. |
