Marathon Petroleum Company LLC is seeking capable and responsible college students who desire to gain excellent hands-on marketing experience. This experience will be gained by performing various tasks involved with the following branches of marketing. Candidates should be following a marketing or business academic pursuit as a major discipline. They should exhibit the following attributes: maturity, self-motivation, thoroughness, flexibility, above average communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. The position requires proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word. Students should be at least a sophomore-level status, and have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.
MARKETING - BRAND DIVISION
MARKETING INTERN
The Brand Division includes four districts: The Eastern District located in Columbus, Ohio; the Western District located in Indianapolis, Indiana; the Northern District located in Romulus, Michigan; and the Southern District located in Atlanta, Georgia.
Experience will be gained from exposure to different Brand Marketing components such as Credit Card, Advertising, Related Products & Training and Operations located in Findlay, Ohio. In addition, experience will be gained from exposure to other areas of the Company that provide services to Brand Marketing and impact the responsibilities of a marketing representative such as: Products & Services, Governmental Affairs, Marketing & Transportation Engineering, Terminal & Transportation, etc.
The student will be assigned to the Related Products & Training Department. The majority of their time will be spent in the field learning the job responsibilities of a marketing representative. The intern may travel to various dealer gasoline stations with the marketing representative, assist in prospecting for new customers, and assume responsibility for projects/studies relating to station financials and operation.
MARKETING - ASPHALT & HEAVY OIL INTERN
The Asphalt & Heavy Oil Intern will be responsible for providing support for various initiatives impacting the Supply, Administrative and Regional components of the organization. In addition, exposure to other areas of the company which provide services to Asphalt & Heavy Oil Marketing, which impact the responsibilities of a territory manager or supply representative such as: Information Technology Services, Business Development, Terminal Transport & Marine, etc.
The student will spend the majority of their time working with the Asphalt & Heavy Oil department staff based in the Findlay, Ohio, office. Occasionally, the intern may have the opportunity to travel to one of the region offices to work with field personnel on select projects.
MARKETING - WHOLESALE INTERN
The Wholesale Intern will be responsible for providing support for various initiatives impacting the Supply, Pricing, and Administrative and Regional components of the organization. In addition, the Wholesale Intern will gain exposure to other areas of the company which provide services to Wholesale Marketing which impact the responsibilities of a Territory Manager such as: Information Technology Services, Products & Services, Governmental Affairs, Terminal Transport & Marine, etc.
The student will be assigned to one of the Wholesale regions (Findlay, Ohio and Atlanta, Georgia), and the majority of their time will be spent supporting and learning the job responsibilities of a Territory Manager. The intern may travel to various customers with the Territory Manager, prospect for new customers, and assume responsibility for sales analysis/projects/studies relating to the Region. The intern will also learn consultative and proposal selling techniques.
MARKETING/TESTING SPECIALIST INTERN
This experience will be gained by operating a mobile products test van in Marathon Petroleum's Brand Division area which includes the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Alabama.
The Marketing/Testing Specialist Intern (MTSC) will be responsible for on-site sampling and testing of gasoline obtained from branded service stations in these states. Gasoline will be tested in order to ensure product quality as follows: fuel quality in all underground tanks, recording water level and taking gasoline samples from the bottom of tanks; fuel quality at the dispenser, checking visual gasoline results and nozzle flow rates. In addition, the MTSC will be asked to check for regulatory signs and install any necessary decals if required. A digital camera is available to obtain on-site photographs of the facility. Marathon Petroleum Company encourages dealers to present a clear and sharp image to our customers.
During the period of employment, the MTSC may be scheduled on a one-week or longer/one-week cycle. The one-week or longer period will be spent van testing followed by several days or one week in the Findlay office where the students will be exposed to different marketing facets of Marathon Petroleum's Brand Marketing organization. These cycles will repeat during the time of employment. While van testing, which will require the MTSC to be away from home base for the entire one-week or longer period, living expenses, including a meal allowance will be provided. A formal van trip report will be written and testing information will be entered into a computer data base system.
CREDIT CARD CENTER INTERN
The Credit Card Intern will be responsible for working on marketing materials for special projects and will work in conjunction with marketing specialists to coordinate outside solicitation activities. In addition the intern will be involved with the administrative tasks of budgeting and application processing. The intern may also be involved in special events such as grand openings and special projects relating to fraud.
The student will spend the majority of their time working with the staff of the Credit Card component of the Brand organization based in the Findlay, Ohio, office. Occasionally, the intern may have the opportunity to travel to one of the region offices to work with field personnel on select projects.
MARKETING - BRAND DIVISION
FINANCE/ACCOUNTING INTERN
The Brand Marketing Division, located in Findlay, Ohio, is responsible for the contractual administration, business development and growth opportunities for over 500 individual customers representing over 3,000 separate locations displaying the Marathon brand image.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Become familiar with the customer base of Brand Marketing and the various types of relationships and contractual obligations specific to a given class of trade.
- Gain a solid working knowledge of the PC based financial analysis and evaluation tools used by Brand Marketing in assessing capital dollar investment, ROI and NPV.
- Work closely with Refining and Marketing Accounting in obtaining sales volume statistics and other relevant factors relating to the customer's level of contractual performance.
- Enter statistical information into an Excel financial model to perform post-audit comparison of actual vs. expected results for a given contract. Summarize results and present findings to Brand Management.
- Work as needed with the four Brand district field offices in performing new business financial evaluations, and communicating those results back to the districts and to local Brand management.
MARKETING REAL ESTATE INTERN
The Real Estate Marketing Intern will be responsible for providing administrative support in the planning of acquisitions and disposition of marketing properties and facilities. The intern will help research areas to facilitate the evaluation of all factors needed to determine the desirability of prospective marketing outlets. In addition, the intern will assist in the creation of marketing materials to assist in the disposal of restaurants, service stations, convenience stores and other miscellaneous properties.
The student will spend the majority of their time working with the Real Estate department based in the Findlay, Ohio, office. Occasionally, the intern may have the opportunity to travel and learn the job responsibilities of a Real Estate Representative such as attending meetings of Zoning Boards and Planning Commissions; providing services to jobber accounts; and participating in negotiations to purchase or dispose of a property.
