Mechanical Engineer Co-op & Intern (Refining)RESPONSIBILITIESReliability: In this job, you will apply the skills learned as a Mechanical Engineering major to a large range of projects in either the reliability or inspection area. You will gain an understanding of the refining environment and how the Maintenance Department fits into day to day operation of the refinery. Specifically, you will learn about the importance of refinery reliability and the inspection program to the overall maintenance of the refinery. Past projects/duties have included the following: Perform failure analysis and equipment evaluations, along with life cycle cost assessments for various pieces of process equipment within the refinery; coordinate the development of the Inspection Group budget - this will include obtaining price quotes, man-hour estimates, justifications for each budget item, and coordinating the demonstration and review of equipment technologies and their application; participate in actual inspections with the Unit Area Inspectors like the non-destructive examination of refinery piping and process heaters. Area Refining Engineer: In this job, you will apply the skills learned as a Mechanical Engineering major to a large range of projects in either the reliability or inspection construction and start-up. You will gain a broad understanding of the refinery, as well as, area in the Engineering Department. Specifically, you will be working with an assigned Area Team to identify and address technical process unit problems and opportunities and will be responsible for organizing and coordinating the development of all types of refining projects from conceptualization through the refining environment. Past projects/duties have included: troubleshooting and problem solving equipment performance problems; development of cost estimates and project economic justifications; perform equipment sizing and design calculations for specification of refinery equipment for purchase; coordination of project construction activities; update refinery equipment and process drawings; work to develop small project construction packages which include work scopes and drawings. Most likely you will be working in the Maintenance Department, which is responsible for installing and maintaining process equipment, maintaining an inspection program for all equipment, and improving the reliability of rotating equipment in the refinery; or the Engineering Department, which is responsible for providing technical service on the various refining processes to the Operations Department and completing various mechanical and electrical design projects within the refinery.
