Purchasing Intern

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Procurement intern will develop an understanding of the Company's strategic sourcing, contract management, and supplier diversity processes; develop a knowledgeable background regarding the Company's policies and procedures related to procurement, contracts and materials management; become familiar with the materials, equipment and services procured for the operations of the Company's components; and establish and maintain rapport with suppliers and the Company's employees and management, all the while developing an awareness of the Company's commitment to high ethical standards, environmental stewardship, employee safety and community responsibility.

Depending upon the location and organizational assignment, the Procurement intern may be involved in hands-on purchasing of indirect goods and services; cross-functional strategic sourcing activities; market and spend analysis; preparation and analysis of bid packages; negotiation of contractual terms and commercial issues; and projects and tasks related to inventory control, transportation and logistics. The intern may use various software applications, including reverse auctions and eProcurement.

Purchasing & Commercial Services/Global Procurement: The Purchasing & Commercial Services (MPC) and Global Procurement (MOC) organizational goals are aligned with the Company's goals and those of the various operating components of Marathon Petroleum Company LLC and Marathon Oil Company. The organization's personnel function in a team-oriented work environment, interacting with the operating components, Law, Business Integrity, Safety, Environmental, Engineering, Maintenance, and other organizations.

The purpose of the Procurement Intern program is to introduce the students to the opportunities available within the Company and to develop and maintain relationships with the best students from the top universities in the field of procurement. The Procurement Management teams strive to provide a mutually beneficial experience by offering assignments that are challenging and developmental to the intern and value-added to the Company.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Desired Majors: Purchasing, Supply Chain Management, Logistics.
  • Hiring Locations: Findlay, Ohio; Houston, Texas; Garyville, Louisiana; Detroit, Michigan; Catlettsburg, Kentucky; St. Paul Park, Minnesota; Robinson, Illinois; Texas City, Texas and Canton, Ohio.
  • Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • Participation in professional and other extracurricular activities is preferred.
  • Candidates entering their junior or senior year and/or candidates who have completed some core curriculum courses will be given preference.
