POLAND

Marathon holds 100 percent working interests in seven concessions in Poland, totaling approximately 1.4 million acres.

Marathon holds working interests in the approximately 296,000 acre Kwidzyn, the 269,000 acre Brodnica and the 166,000 acre Rypin concessions in northern Poland, the 89,000 acre Plonsk S, 61,000 acre Plonsk SE and 293,000 Ciechanow concessions in central Poland, and the 249,000 acre Orzechow concession in southeast Poland. The objective is Lower Paleozoic shale gas, similar to many of the successful North America plays, at depths of between 8,000 and 13,000 feet.

The concession term for the Kwidzyn, Brodnica, Rypin and Orzechow blocks is 5 ½ years and is 5 years for the other blocks. Current plans call for 2-D seismic and at least one well per concession.

While there have been a number of historical wells drilled through the prospective section, none has yet tested the shale gas play. Industry is expected to commence modern drilling in mid-2010. A successful shale gas play could supply both Poland and the rest of the European market, which relies on imports for over 50 percent of its supply.
