Renewable FuelsMarathon has supported the use of renewable fuels for more than 15 years and is one of the largest blenders of ethanol in the U.S. In 2006, Marathon blended approximately 550 million gallons of ethanol. Currently, Marathon offers E-10 (90 percent gasoline/10 percent ethanol) at 42 of its terminals. The Company has plans to expand that number to nearly 60 terminals throughout the Midwest and Southeast. Additionally, E-85 (85 percent ethanol/15 percent gasoline) is available at a number of terminals. By mid-2008, Marathon will have the capability to blend approximately 1.2 billion gallons of ethanol per year across its entire light products terminal network. In 2007, the Company added storage and distribution facilities for biodiesel, another renewable fuel, at its Louisville, Kentucky, and Robinson and Champaign, Illinois, terminals. Marathon has similar biodiesel blending infrastructure at its St. Paul Park terminal. The Company also formed a joint venture to construct and operate one or more ethanol plants in the U.S. Construction of the first plant, in Greenville, Ohio, commenced in late 2006, and initial operation is anticipated in early 2008. |
