Canton, Ohio

The Canton refinery, built in 1931, was acquired by Ashland in 1948 when it merged with Allied Oil Company and became fully owned by Marathon in 2005. The refinery is a moderate conversion plant with a processing configuration that enables it to run heavy sour crudes as well as sweet crudes. The refinery has a capacity of 78,000 barrels per day.

Refinery operations include crude fractionation, catalytic cracking, catalytic polymerization, hydrotreating, reforming, alkylation and sulfur recovery. The product slate consists of gasoline,
distillate, asphalt, heavy fuel oil, propane, sulfur and low sulfur gasoline. The commissioning of a new distillate hydrotreater in 2009 enables the refinery also to produce ULSD.

History

The facility was built in 1931 as the Allegheny-Arrow Oil Company but was forced to close in 1932 during the economically troubled times of the Great Depression. It reopened in 1936 and was sold to the Allied Oil Company in 1937. In 1948, Ashland Oil Company acquired the facility and began the modernization that broadened the refinery’s market presence and widened its product offerings. In 1998, Ashland Inc. and Marathon Oil Company formed Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC and the Canton refinery became part of the new company's seven refinery system.
