Polymer Gel TechnologyMarathon's cross-linked polymer gel technology solves a number of water control problems associated with bottom water, waterflooding and enhanced oil recovery processes. These gels can function as blocking agents, improving the areal conformance of the flood water. Specific gel types can be formulated to accommodate a large range of reservoir temperatures and water compositions. MARCIT-CTSM gel reduces flow in fractures without entering the matrix. Many reservoirs are either naturally fractured or contain solution channels resulting from excessive or incorrectly applied stimulation fluids, or from long-term injection of water or carbon dioxide. Because MARCIT-CTSM gel reduces flow in fractures without entering the matrix, water production can be reduced without decreasing oil in most cases. In fact, oil is often increased substantially when MARCIT-CTSM is applied to producing wells. MARCIT-LCSM offers a simple solution to lost-circulation by "gluing" together cellulose fibers with gel. Marathon, in combination with M&D Industries, developed a lost-circulation product by combining Marathon's MARCIT-CTSM gel technology with M&D's Ultra-Seal Technology. From a single bag, this product can be handled with rig equipment and pumped as a lost-circulation pill. MARA-SEALSM gel is formulated with low molecular weight polymer that allows for penetration into matrix pore spaces for complete shut-off. MARA-SEALSM is specifically designed with a low viscosity prior to cross-linking to allow injectivity into small pore throats. When placed in small openings (such as pore throats, small channels in cement behind casing or casing leaks), the result is total shut-off. This product is also excellent for casing leak repairs.
