An Atmosphere of Diversity

Dulce Hurst manages diversity and compliance efforts for Speedway SuperAmerica (SSA), a Marathon subsidiary that owns and operates approximately 1,600 retail gasoline outlets and convenience stores in nine Midwestern U.S. states.

"SSA has about 16,000 hourly personnel in our stores who make a difference in our ability to be competitive and succeed as a company. We blend diversity training with customer service training for our store personnel. If our customer service representative behind the store counter is respectful and accepting of customers, those customers will come back to our stores and hopefully spread the word about the good experience they had at SSA.

"We try to make all employees aware of diversity by creating an atmosphere of fun, respect, teamwork and acceptance. Our diversity programs expose employees to new ways of doing things and encourage them to see others' points of view. Respecting people and giving them an opportunity to show their talents allows them to continue to excel and help make the Company more profitable.

"I've been with the Company for 19 years serving in a variety of roles from accounting, planning and analysis and most notably payroll. In 2006, I got the opportunity to become manager of diversity and compliance. I didn't know much about it, but someone saw potential in me and had an open mind. The growth I've had in diversity is amazing. There are great opportunities to learn from different organizations in this company. A person with an open mind and willingness to learn can go places at Speedway SuperAmerica and Marathon."
