WE WORK WITH CARE

Ruth Cade

In this day of heightened environmental awareness, Ruth Cade says she's heartened to work for a company that makes protecting the environment a core value. And Cade should know. In her dozen-plus years with Marathon, Cade has helped implement environmental programs across the Company's seven refineries, in addition to working in an operations and technical-service role.

Cade recently took the position of environmental supervisor at Marathon's Catlettsburg, Kentucky, refinery, coming full circle to the facility where she began her career in 1996.

"For me, the one thing that stands out more than anything is the level of integrity the Company shows on a day-to-day basis in its commitment to safety and the environment," Cade said. "That's always the focus. We start meetings with discussions about safety and the environment being first. We do what we say we're going to do. We hold ourselves to a very high standard with regard to safety and environmental performance."

As environmental supervisor, Cade's responsibilities include making sure the refinery's operations are in compliance with all government regulations, working to improve environmental performance and incorporating new requirements into the facility's programs.

"I often tell our interns as they come through here, ‘If you're interested in protecting the environment, work in an industry where you can actually make a difference,'" she said. "I feel like we're really the people who are setting the systems and programs in place to protect the environment."
