Glossary:
B
Barrels of oil equivalent (BOE)
A unit of measure to quantify crude oil and natural gas amounts using the same basis. Natural gas volumes are converted to BOE on a basis of 6,000:1 (standard cubic feet to BOE).
Biodiversity
Refers broadly to the variety of life on earth at the genetic, species and ecosystem levels; includes the processes that link these together and enable them to function.
Biofuels
Transportation fuels such as ethanol that are derived from living plants, animals or their byproducts. These fuels are usually blended with the petroleum fuels (gasoline and diesel), but they can also be used on their own.
C
Capacity building
Establishing mechanisms that allow communities (or nations) to develop and sustain themselves through their own human capital.
Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)
Independent not-for-profit organization that holds the world's largest database of corporate climate change information, obtained from voluntary responses to annual information requests and available to the global marketplace.
Condensate
A natural gas liquid recovered from associated and nonassociated gas wells from lease separators or field facilities.
Corporate social responsibility (CSR)
The concept that organizations, especially corporations, have an obligation to consider the interests of customers, employees, shareholders, communities and the environment in all aspects of their operations.
E
Energy efficiency
The result of both reducing energy use and conserving resources through reductions in flaring and venting.
ENERGY STAR®
A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency partnership offering a proven energy management strategy that helps in measuring current energy performance, setting goals, tracking savings, and rewarding improvements.
Energy use
The consumption of fuel, electricity and steam in the operation of equipment and buildings.
Exploration
The process of searching for minerals, such as oil and gas, that enables an oil or gas company to determine whether to proceed with development and production. Exploration activities include geophysical surveys, drilling to locate an oil or gas reservoir, and the drilling of additional wells after a discovery to determine the boundaries of an underground reservoir.
F
Flaring and venting
The burning or release of natural gas that is often produced in association with oil, a process that typically occurs when there is no market or on-site use for the gas.
G
Global Gas Flaring Reduction (GGFR)
An initiative aimed at progressively reducing gas flaring and venting by sharing global best practices and implementing country-specific programs. GGFR is a private-public partnership coordinated by the World Bank.
Global Performance System (GPS)
Marathon management system that provides a formal framework to fulfill the Upstream business' commitment to HES performance, security and social responsibility. The GPS has core elements that are internationally recognized as key components of best practice management systems that drive business excellence.
I
Indigenous peoples
Those peoples whose social, cultural, political and economic conditions differentiate them from the dominant societal and community sectors that have developed around them.
N
Natural Gas Star
A U.S. EPA voluntary partnership that encourages U.S. and international oil and natural gas companies to adopt cost-effective technologies and practices that improve operational efficiency and reduce emissions of methane.
Non-governmental organization (NGO)
An organization that is independent from the government, generally a nonprofit organization devoted to providing assistance to or advancing a particular cause or issue.
Normalization
The expression of one output (e.g., emissions) relative to some aggregated measure of output (e.g., barrels of oil produced or refinery throughput).
P
Produced water
Water that is brought to the surface during production of hydrocarbons.
Production
A generic industry term that refers to operations and activities involved in bringing oil and resources to the earth's surface, as well as initial processing.
R
Renewable energy
Energy resources that are not depleted when consumed or converted into other forms of energy (for example, ethanol, solar, geothermal and wind).
Reserves
Reserves consist of oil, gas and bitumen considered producible under existing economic and operating conditions.
Responsible Care Management System®
American Chemistry Council's integrated management system to drive results in community awareness and emergency response, distribution, employee health and safety, pollution prevention, process safety and product stewardship.
Retail marketing
A generic industry term that refers to the retail sales of petroleum products, including gasoline service stations and convenience stores. In this Report, "Retail Marketing" (or "Retail") refers to Speedway SuperAmerica LLC (SSA).
S
Stakeholders
Those who affect, are affected by, or have an interest in the Company's performance.
T
Transparency
The level of openness a company or government has concerning how it makes and spends its money.
V
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)
Organic compounds, excluding methane and ethane, that contain many hydrocarbons, oxygenated compounds and compounds containing sulfur. VOCs contribute to the formation of ground-level smog.
Voluntary Protection Program (VPP)
U.S. OSHA program that promotes effective worksite-based safety and health. Management, labor and OSHA establish cooperative relationships at workplaces that have implemented a comprehensive safety and health management system. Approval into VPP is OSHA's official recognition of exemplary occupational safety and health achieved by employers and employees. Participants are reevaluated every three to five years, with incident rates reviewed annually.
