Methamphetamine Awareness and Prevention
Addressing social challenges

Methamphetamine abuse is devastating communities across America. Methamphetamine users suffer significant health problems and eventually death, and use can lead to increased rates of violent crime, domestic violence and child abuse.

Marathon became involved in methamphetamine awareness through engagement with local and state elected leaders in the communities where the Company has operations, who identified methamphetamines as the most serious social challenge in their communities. To address the issue, Marathon partnered with local leaders to create an awareness and education program first targeted at employees and contractors and later the wider community.

In 2006, Marathon presented the program for the first time to local employees. The response was overwhelming and at the urging of employees and community leaders Marathon shared the presentation to surrounding communities and schools. This momentum has continued and to date the program has reached 42 communities and over 11,000 people.

In recognition of Marathon's work in substance abuse prevention the Company was awarded the Starfish Award by the state of Wyoming in 2007, where the program was launched.

The awareness program is continuing in 2008 with outreach throughout Marathon's U.S. operations.
