Education and Training

Marathon provides programs and learning opportunities to develop skilled, competitive workforces in the communities in which we operate. Examples of education and training projects include:

  • Scholarship programs: Marathon is committed to the development of local talent through scholarship programs. Marathon provides scholarships at Texas A&M University for top students from Equatorial Guinea in petroleum industry related courses. Students also have the opportunity to participate in summer internships at Marathon locations to provide them with relevant business experience. The first two students will graduate in 2009.
  • Louisiana Refining Division (LRD) has engaged with stakeholders in St. John Parish to enhance the local schools system and community by supporting and actively participating in education programs. LRD adopted East St. John Elementary and High Schools as Partners in Education. The local community faces many challenges and lacks the training and education needed for the technology-driven jobs of tomorrow. LRD programs included mentoring for high risk students, providing necessary school supplies to underprivileged students, donating lab supplies and providing volunteers to start up a new science lab, and initiating a LEAP test tutoring program.
  • Energy Explorers, is a unique regional energy industry partnership with Fremont County (Wyoming) BOCES (Board of Cooperative Education Services) that brings a new class to the high school curriculum. The energy industry partners provide visiting instructors, company trainers and "on-the-job" field experiences that allow students to have an inside look at the career opportunities in the oil/gas sector. This program, which is in its second year has curtailed high school dropout rates and encourages more students to attend college.
