Energy Efficiency

  • Marathon participates in the American Petroleum Institute (API) Climate Challenge, with a commitment to improve refinery energy efficiency 10 percent between 2002 and 2012. Marathon estimates its refineries achieved a 4.5 percent energy efficiency improvement from 2002 through 2006.
  • The Refining Divisions in Ohio, Louisiana, Minnesota and Texas have been awarded EPA's Energy STAR for being in the top quartile for energy efficiency of U.S. petroleum refineries.
  • Upstream operations worldwide created and implemented efficiency plans designed to identify operation and energy efficiency opportunities. Types of projects include installation of pneumatic (air) systems, preventative maintenance to minimize emergency shutdowns and replacement of less efficient equipment.
  • The Company is a charter member of both the U.S. and international Natural Gas STAR programs, committed to reducing methane emissions from production operations. During Marathon's tenure in the U.S. program (from 1994), the Company has eliminated a cumulative 46 billion cubic feet of methane emissions earning the Production Partner of the Year Award in 1997 and again in 2006.
  • Marathon is a partner in the Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership, which includes a standard to eliminate venting and reduce flaring of associated gas. The Company's Equatorial Guinea project, completed in 2005, is an example of progress and commitment to this standard. Due to this project, flare volumes in Equatorial Guinea have decreased by more than 90 percent.
