Wildlife Habitat certificationEmployee teams have transformed more than 1,400 acres of Marathon wooded areas, grassland, cropland, lakes and wetlands into habitat certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC). The nonprofit WHC is a cooperative effort of the environmental community and industry to conserve and restore natural ecosystems for the benefit of humanity and biodiversity. The first site to receive WHC certification was the Catlettsburg, Kentucky, refinery in 1994. In 2006, an abandoned gravel pit near the Robinson, Illinois, refinery became the 12th Marathon facility to become WHC-certified by voluntarily developing, implementing and maintaining wildlife habitats. Five additional facilities are working toward certification. Becoming a certified habitat requires significant effort and commitment -- requiring a minimum of 12 months of establishing, documenting and maintaining the habitat, as well as maintaining a relationship with outside agencies, before official certification can be requested. Marathon's continued commitment to building Wildlife habitats around our various operating areas demonstrates the Company's on-going strategies to producing oil and gas safely and in an environmentally sound manner. |
