Building Hope

In 2006, Speedway SuperAmerica (SSA) had the vision to do something different for their annual United Way Day of Caring -- constructing a playground for the Interfaith Hospitality Network in Springfield, Ohio.

The Interfaith Hospitality Network is a non-profit organization that helps homeless families during difficult times. The playground, aptly named ‘Hope Corner,' provides a safe environment for the children using the network's resources.

Hope Corner features colorful equipment, a basketball court, sandbox, benches, shade trees and landscaping. Planning and preparation for the project began three months ahead of construction, giving SSA an opportunity to bring others onboard.

SSA was the catalyst for driving this community enhancement project, with more than 140 employees participating in the construction. Numerous companies and organizations also became stakeholders, by donating time, money and resources to make this worthwhile initiative become a shining star in the community.

SSA continued its partnership with The United Way through a post-project debrief and strategy session -- sharing lessons learned and best practices. The United Way organization will use this project template as a benchmark for future community and business partnership considerations.
